  • The National Portrait Gallery was selected as a Winning Structure (Buildings Category) in the international competition run by the International Federation for Structural Concrete (fib).

  • A major stage of JPW's Eastern Precinct for the Australian War Memorial opens, including a new cafe, landscaped grounds, a large underground car park and several memorials, including a statue of Weary Dunlop and a National Service Memorial that will be officially opened in September.

    December 2008 - National Portrait Gallery opens
  • The new National Portrait Gallery was opened by the Prime Minister on 3 December 2008 with an initial display of more than 450 portraits.
    November 2008 - Australian Museum Collections & Research Building opens
  • The new 8 storey building houses some of the Australian Museum's 80 research scientists and 14.5 million specimens.

    Models of four recent JPW projects have been selected for Australia’s pavilion at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, opening mid September 2008, including the Australian Museum Collections & Research Building.

  • A public exhibition on the TMAG Masterplan by JPW and Terroir, architects in collaboration, opens in Hobart. The exhibition was designed by JPW/Terroir.

  • Richard Johnson has been awarded the RAIA's highest accolade, the Gold Medal in recognition of his exceptional body of executed work and his outstanding contribution to the development of the profession of architecture in Australia.

  • JPW has won a commendation for Research and Communication in Landscape Architecture for the RTA, Noise Wall Design Guidelines.

  • Westpac Place has won an excellence in property award from the Australian Property Institute (NSW) for Leighton Properties Pty Ltd.

  • Westpac Place has won the Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design and a Commercial Architecture Commendation. The jury said "Westpac Place is a joy to be in, it has reinvigorated this part of town, and Sydney is the realwinner here. The secret to the success of this development lies in the initial planning concept that sought to provide public benefit, and understood the ingredients necessary for success."
    June 2007 - The Arts of Islam opens at AGNSW
  • A major new exhibition designed by JPW, of Islamic arts from the Nasser D Khalili Collection, opens at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
    May 2007 - Shortlisted for Canberra Central Parklands Competition

  • JPW has won The Australian timber design award for the best use of engineered timber products for Abbotsleigh Research Centre. It also won a highly commended Award for in the Public and Commercial Buildings Section.
    October 2006 - RAIA National Award for Commercial Buildings
  • JPW has won the RAIA National Award for Commercial Buildings for the Sydney Hilton. The jury said “ the building’s internal spaces had been turned inside out and offered back to the city, while at the same time embracing their surroundings. The refurbishment had resulted in a dramatic new urban space.”

  • Westpac Place has won the NSW Urban Taskforce Development Excellence Award and an award in the Commercial Category. The award acknowledges Development that achieves the best outcomes for all stakeholders.

  • The Johnson Pilton Walker Office has won the National 2006 Corporate Interior Design Award and the Best of State (Commercial) Award at the Design Institute of Australia’s award evening at the newly refurbished Hilton Sydney.The award jury commented, “This is a sophisticated and refined solution within a challenging building. An intellectual response. This is a minimalist environment that also succeeds in providing a delightful level of warmth.
    March 2006 - Abbotsleigh Research Centre Opening
  • The Abbotsleigh Research Centre was officially opened by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, Governor of NSW. This is the first building to be completed as part of the JPW Masterplan for Abbotsleigh School. “Underpinning our educational philosophy is the need for innovative and flexible learning areas that will support and enhance our teaching and learning activities. These facilities must provide for the latest in technological, research and study support. They must be purpose built as well as practical to maintain and ensure the needs of our students are being met today and into the future.” Phillip Bell, Chairman of Abbotsleigh School Council.
    January 2006 - Luban Prize
  • The recently completed Suzhou Logistic Centre has won the 2006 China Architectual Project Luban Award. This Award is the highest honour in Chinese architectural realm in recognition of project excellence. Jointly presented by the National Construction Ministry and the Chinese Architectural Association it combines the National Excellent Project Award and Architectural Project Luban Award together as China Architectural Project Luban Award since 1996.
    December 2005 - UNSW Asia Science & Engineering Building
  • UNSW Asia is the new campus for the University of New South Wales in Singapore. Johnson Pilton Walker has won the invited design competition for the Science & Engineering Building that will form part of the first stage of development of this new “garden university in a garden city”.
    December 2005 - Western Sydney Parkland Ideas Competition Winner
  • JPW were recently announced as one of the joint winners of the Western Sydney Parklands Ideas Competition. The competition invited ideas for the development of the 490 Ha Bungarribee Precinct of the Western Sydney Parklands. The precinct will form the main community recreation hub for both active and passive recreation in the northern part of the Parklands.
    November 2005 - National Portrait Gallery Design Competition Winner
  • Johnson Pilton Walker has won the international design competition for the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. The National Portrait Gallery will be the first building in the Parliamentary Zone since the opening of the New Parliament House in 1988. The new 8500 sqm building will include gallery spaces for the collection as well as temporary exhibitions.
    November 2005 - Australian Timber Design Award
  • At the recent national Timber Design Awards held in Brisbane, Johnson Pilton Walker was announced as the winner of Interior Fitout - Best Use of Timber Flooring. This award is in recognition of the timber flooring and finish of the new JPW office fitout in Australia Square. The kaolin clay and soap finish to the Southern Blue Gum boards provides a soft matte finish that is robust and easy to maintain.
    October 2005 - Chinese Taxation Bureau
  • Johnson Pilton Walker has won an international design competition for the Chinese Taxation Bureau headquarters in Suzhou which included entries from Atkins (UK), Perkins & Wills (USA) and RMJM (UK). This 80,000 sqm office tower will house the local and national Chinese Taxation Bureau for Suzhou. The project expected for completion early 2008 includes two podium levels for over-the-counter taxation and financial services, a landscaped roof garden, highly efficient/flexible office space with an energy efficient façade system.
    September 2005 - National Portrait Gallery Shortlist
  • Johnson Pilton Walker has been selected as one of the six finalist for the National Portrait Gallery design competition. The new National Portrait Gallery building will be located in the Canberra Parliamentary Zone, adjacent to the High Court of Australia. The winning scheme will be announced in December.
    July 2005 - New Building for Australian Museum
  • Australian Museum has announced the appointment Johnson Pilton Walker as architects for the new science and collections storage building. The new building will accommodate some of the Museum’s 80 research scientists and laboratories as well as storing part of the approximately 14.5 million specimens from the collection. The construction of the new building on the Museum’s site is due to commence in late 2006.
    July 2005 - Sydney Hilton Reopens
  • Johnson Pilton Walker’s redesign for the 577 room Sydney Hilton was reopened to the public on 15 July 2005. The $200M refurbishment took 30 months to complete and included the reconstruction of the podium public areas & conference centre, recladding of the facade and refurbishment of guest rooms.
    April 2005 - JPW Wins National Competition for Laguna Whitsundays
  • JPW has won the architectural competition to design a new village centre for the rapidly growing North Queensland coastal community of Laguna Whitsundays. The competition attracted more than 60 expressions of interest from design firms and consortia worldwide. The design brief sought innovative ideas to create “a new paradigm in sub-tropical village living that is inclusive of the needs of the Laguna Whitsundays community, the environment and enterprise”.
