Utzon Architects and JPW, Architects in Collaboration, have explored options to improve the existing Opera Theatre at the Sydney Opera House.
The study concluded that it is possible to create a great new opera theatre within the existing framework of the opera house by moving the loading dock and vehicular access underground, with access via a ramp-tunnel from near the tarpian wall.
This strategy has multiple benefits, including:forecourt and concourse areas relieved of vehicular traffic
- much better working conditions for loading and unloading of stage equipment
- the central passage can be part of the circulation system as Utzon originally intended
- the acoustic properties of the venue can be drastically improved
- additional seating within the hall can be created, with better sight lines for all
- improved performance spaces, including the orchestra pit
- improved mechanical services and lighting of the space
- significantly improved accessibility
- a new opera theatre interior that is in harmony with the exterior
