April 2006 - 2006 Interior Design Award
The Johnson Pilton Walker Office has won the National 2006 Corporate Interior Design Award and the Best of State (Commercial) Award at the Design Institute of Australia’s award evening at the newly refurbished Hilton Sydney.
The award jury commented, “This is a sophisticated and refined solution within a challenging building. An intellectual response. This is a minimalist environment that also succeeds in providing a delightful level of warmth.
March 2006 - Abbotsleigh Research Centre Opening
The Abbotsleigh Research Centre was officially opened by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir, Governor of NSW. This is the first building to be completed as part of the JPW Masterplan for Abbotsleigh School.
“Underpinning our educational philosophy is the need for innovative and flexible learning areas that will support and enhance our teaching and learning activities. These facilities must provide for the latest in technological, research and study support. They must be purpose built as well as practical to maintain and ensure the needs of our students are being met today and into the future.” Phillip Bell, Chairman of Abbotsleigh School Council.
January 2006 - Luban Prize
The recently completed Suzhou Logistic Centre has won the 2006 China Architectual Project Luban Award. This Award is the highest honour in Chinese architectual realm in recognition of project excellence.
Jointly presented by the National Construction Ministry and the Chinese Architectural Association it combines the National Excellent Project Award and Architectural Project Luban Award together as China Architectural Project Luban Award since 1996.
December 2005 - UNSW Asia Science & Engineering Building
UNSW Asia is the new campus for the University of New South Wales in Singapore. Johnson Pilton Walker has won the invited design competition for the Science & Engineering Building that will form part of the first stage of development of this new “garden university in a garden city”.
December 2005 - Western Sydney Parkland Ideas Competition Winner
JPW were recently announced as one of the joint winners of the Western Sydney Parklands Ideas Competition. The competition invited ideas for the development of the 490 Ha Bungarribee Precinct of the Western Sydney Parklands. The precinct will form the main community recreation hub for both active and passive recreation in the northern part of the Parklands.
November 2005 - National Portrait Gallery Design Competition Winner
Johnson Pilton Walker has won the international design competition for the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. The National Portrait Gallery will be the first building in the Parliamentary Zone since the opening of the New Parliament House in 1988. The new 8500 sqm new building will include gallery spaces for the collection as well as temporary exhibitions.
November 2005 - Australian Timber Design Award
At the recent national Timber Design Awards held in Brisbane, Johnson Pilton Walker was announced as the winner of Interior Fitout - Best Use of Timber Flooring. This award is in recognition of the timer flooring and finish of the new JPW office fitout in Australia Square. The kaolin clay and soap finish to the Southern Blue Gum boards provides a soft matte finish that is robust and easy to maintain.
October 2005 - Chinese Taxation Bureau
Johnson Pilton Walker has won an international design competition for the Chinese Taxation Bureau headquarters in Suzhou which included entries from Atkins (UK), Perkins & Wills (USA) and RMJM (UK). This 80,000 sqm office tower will house the local and national Chinese Taxation Bureau for Suzhou. The project expected for completion early 2008 includes two podium levels for over-the-counter taxation and financial services, a landscaped roof garden, highly efficient/flexible office space with an energy efficient façade system.
September 2005 - National Portrait Gallery Shortlist
Johnson Pilton Walker has been selected as one of the six finalist for the National Portrait Gallery design competition. The new National Portrait Gallery building will be located in the Canberra Parliamentary Zone, adjacent to the High Court of Australia. The winning scheme will be announced in December.
July 2005 - New Building for Australian Museum
Australian Museum has announced the appointment Johnson Pilton Walker as architects for the new science and collections storage building. The new building will accommodate some of the Museum’s 80 research scientists and laboratories as well as storing part of the approximately 14.5 million specimens from the collection. The construction of the new building on the Museum’s site is due to commence in late 2006.
July 2005 - Sydney Hilton Reopens
Johnson Pilton Walker’s redesign for the 577 room Sydney Hilton was reopened to the public on 15 July 2005. The $200M refurbishment took 30 months to complete and included the reconstruction of the podium public areas & conference centre, recladding of the facade and refurbishment of guest rooms.
April 2005 - JPW Wins National Competition for Laguna Whitsundays
JPW has won the architectural competition to design a new village centre for the rapidly growing North Queensland coastal community of Laguna Whitsundays. The competition attracted more than 60 expressions of interest from design firms and consortia worldwide. The design brief sought innovative ideas to create “a new paradigm in sub-tropical village living that is inclusive of the needs of the Laguna Whitsundays community, the environment and enterprise”.
