This exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales presented an overview of 400 years of European old-master paintings and drawings from the Renaissance to Impressionism. Having travelled from the National Galleries of Scotland, all the works in this significant collection are considered masterpieces. Through the architecture and subtle detailing, a rhythm of high impact and calmer spaces created a stimulating experience for the viewer, with each work uniquely presented. The exhibition design pays homage to the gallery in Edinburgh, from the portico entrance through to the octagonal rooms and use of fabrics from the Isle of Bute. The Greats provided a rare opportunity for the Australian public to have access to, experience and enjoy masterpieces of the highest calibre by the most prominent names in Western art.
