JPW and The Arts Group Design Institute in Suzhou China have been appointed to develop a new lakefront city masterplan following an international design competition. Historically Suqian consisted of several smaller villages which relocated, rebuilt, and developed to suit environmental conditions, flooding along the Yellow River and the construction of the Grand Canal. The new masterplan modifies an existing city plan to ensure the lakefront city responds to its unique location between Santai mountain park and Luoma Lake. A green grid of continuous open parkland is overlaid on the existing city, utilising undeveloped land to connect urban developments to the natural environment. Between the mountain and the lake the green grid overlay connects a series of existing ponds and creeks which form the overland water flow before eventually finding its way to Luoma Lake.
